DTC P0087 Fuel rail pressure – too low
DETECTION CONDITION
•  The PCM monitors the fuel pressure in the common rail from the fuel pressure sensor while the engine is running. If the fuel pressure is less than the threshold, the PCM determines that the fuel pressure is too low.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Fuel metering valve malfunction (built-in fuel pump)
•  Fuel pump malfunction
•  Fuel pressure sensor malfunction
•  Fuel injector malfunction
•  Fuel injector improper connection
•  Leakage or clogging in fuel line
•  Restriction or damage in fuel filter
•  PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
•  Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.

VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related service repair information availability.
•  Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY CURRENT SIGNAL STATUS: IS CONCERN INTERMITTENT OR CONSTANT
•  Connect the M-MDS to DLC-2.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Start the engine.
•  Retrieve the DTC.
•  Is the same DTC retrieved?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Intermittent concern exists.
Perform the “INTERMITTENT CONCERN TROUBLESHOOTING”.

IDENTIFY TRIGGER DTC FOR FREEZE FRAME DATA
•  Is P0191, P0192, P0193, P0251, P0253 or P0254 on FREEZE FRAME DATA?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FUEL PIPE CONNECTION ON FUEL TANK
•  Inspect the fuel pipes for supply and return connection at fuel tank.
•  Are fuel pipes connected properly?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Reconnect fuel pipes properly, then go to Step 12.

INSPECT FUEL LINE
•  Turn the engine switch off.
•  Inspect for fuel leakage or clogging in the following fuel lines for each cylinder:
―  Fuel tank and fuel filter
―  Fuel filter and fuel pump
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace suspect fuel line, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FUEL FILTER
•  Visually inspect the fuel filter for the following:
―  Clogging or leakage
―  Restriction or adhesion by foreign material
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace or remove the foreign material, then go to step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FUEL METERING VALVE
•  Inspect the fuel metering valve.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the fuel pump, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR
•  Inspect the fuel pressure sensor.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the common rail, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT COMMON RAIL
•  Inspect the common rail.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the common rail, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR
•  Inspect the fuel injector for each cylinder.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace suspect fuel injector, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY THAT DTC P0087 TROUBLESHOOTING IS COMPLETED
•  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
No
Replace the fuel pump.

VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
•  Perform the after repair procedure.
•  Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
DTC troubleshooting completed.
