Some 2017-2018 Fusion vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine and built on or before 18-Aug-2017 may exhibit an illuminated MIL with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0071 and/or P068A. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or Ford J2534 Diagnostic Software (FJDS) release 107.03 or higher. Some 2017 C-MAX/Fusion Hybrid/Energi and MKZ Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P0071 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This DTC can be set after the vehicle is stored inside a warm location for several hours and then driven on a cold day. Under these conditions the PCM may see a temperature sensor concern when it first compares the ambient air temperature (AAT) sensor to other engine temperature sensors and set the DTC. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 104.04 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the internet when entering module programming to obtain the latest updates. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.

IF AFTER PERFORMING NORMAL PINPOINT TEST DIAGNOSIS, A COMPONENT FAILURE IS NOT IDENTIFIED, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR PART REPLACEMENT. HAVING THE VEHICLE PARKED AND STARTED IN A WARM ENCLOSED AREA BEFORE BEING DRIVEN INTO COLD TEMPERATURES CAN INADVERTENTLY CAUSE THESE SYMPTOMS AND DTC. THE HVAC AND MESSAGE CENTER FUNCTIONS WILL RETURN TO NORMAL AFTER THE VEHICLE IS SHUT DOWN AND RESTARTED. CLEAR THE DTC USING THE FORD INTEGRATED DIAGNOSTIC TOOL (IDS) OR EQUIVALENT. ENGINEERING IS INVESTIGATING. MONITOR OASIS FOR UPDATES.

The customer observes an MIL. The technician is able to verify the MIL and notices fault code P0071 stored in the DME. PCNA is aware of this this issue. As background information, the fault is caused by the temperature sensor not communicating with the DME via CAN.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Vehicle Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on and/or the air conditioning may be inoperative. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0071. Technician will need to reprogram the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2 using Service Programming System and Tis2Web.
