This may be due to a concern with the cylinder head valve guides. Vehicles with this condition may also exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0316, P0524 and/or P06DD with the excessive oil consumption. Blue smoke may also be present from the exhaust only after a hot restart. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to replace the cylinder heads.

This is caused by a drop in engine oil pressure due to a piece of foreign object stuck on the oil pump pressure relief valve or oil control valve (OCV). The temporary entry of the foreign object triggers a check engine light on, but rough idle will not be produced until a later time.

It is accompanied by a master warning indication/warning light illumination, engine oil pressure indication/engine oil warning light illumination. DTC P0524:00: Engine oil pressure too low. Due to improper PCM control logic, the engine oil valve may not work quickly enough under certain situations, resulting in the engine oil pressure increasing slower than usual. To eliminate this concern, the PCM software has been modified.

Some 2016-2017 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) or 5.0L engine may experience low or no oil pressure indication on the oil pressure gauge with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0521,P0522, P0523 and/or P0524 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory. This may be due to liquid contamination inside the engine oil pressure sensor connector. If evidence of liquid contamination is found, replace the oil pressure sensor. Inspect the connector seals on C1657 of the 12C508 engine harness for damage and repair as necessary. Do NOT use di-electric grease in the sensor electrical connector. For claiming, use causal part 9D290 and applicable labor operation in section 9 of the service labor time standard (SLTS) manual.
