PITSTOP: DTC P0456/P0442 WITH FUEL PUMP SEAL DAMAGE - This Pitstop provides information regarding DTC P0456/P0442 (Evaporative Emissions System ? (Very) Small Leak Detected) or fuel smell on some 2017MY Cadenza (YG) vehicles, produced before August 7, 2017 and some Optima Hybrid (JF HEV) vehicles, produced before August 16, 2017. When addressing the concern with DTC P0456/P0442 and the vapor lines, fuel cap, and all other corresponding circuits are found to be within specifications, it may be necessary to inspect the fuel pump seal for damage. If this seal is found to be torn or split, replace the fuel pump seal by referring to the ?Engine Control / Fuel System ? Fuel Delivery System ? Low Pressure Fuel Pump ? Repair procedures? chapter in the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.

Some vehicles may have a MIL illumination with DTC's P0441, P0442, P0455, or P0456 stored in memory. To determine the location of the evaporative system leak, follow the repair procedure below. P0441 - Evaporative emission control system incorrect purge flow P0442 - EVAP system leak detected (small leak) P0455 - EVAP system leak detected (gross leak) P0456 - EVAP system leak detected (very small leak) NOTE: P0441 is a DTC for purge flow, however, it can be stored when evaporative emissions are leaking from the fuel filler cap. Evaporative emissions leak from the fuel filler cap when the cap is not closed properly after refueling. When diagnosing an evaporative emissions leak from the fuel filler cap, DO NOT TOUCH the fuel filler cap.

Dealers will inspect the pipe for wear, install a bumper on the pipe; and if necessary, replace the purge pipe.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Cause This may be caused by the fracture or breaking of the gasoline filler neck recirculation line connector Correction If you encounter a vehicle with the above concern, complete the following procedure: 1. Raise the vehicle and visually inspect the fuel tank filler vent hose connector for damage. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI. • If connector is damaged, replace the fuel tank filler vent hose. Refer to Fuel Tank Filler Vent Hose Replacement in SI. • If there is no damage to the connector, continue diagnosis referring to SI.
