Mazda Factory OBD-II DTC P0234 Code Diagnostic Procedure

P0234 Turbocharger over boost condition
DETECTION CONDITION
•  Permanent Bypass Air governor deviation – Negative governor deviation below limit
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Air suction at intake-air system (between MAF sensor and turbocharger)
•  MAP sensor characteristic malfunction
•  Variable boost control valve actuator struck
•  Variable boost control solenoid valve stuck open
•  Turbocharger malfunction
•  PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
•  Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.

VERIFY REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related service repair information availability.
•  Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

IDENTIFY TRIGGER DTC FOR FREEZE FRAME DATA
•  Is DTC P0234 on FREEZE FRAME DATA?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to the troubleshooting procedures for DTC in FREEZE FRAME DATA.

INSPECT AIR SUCTION AT INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM
•  Inspect the intake-air system for air suction between MAF sensor and turbocharger.
•  Is there any air suction?
Yes
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part, then go to Step 9.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT VARIABLE BOOST CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE FOR STUCK OPEN
•  Inspect the variable boost control (VBC) solenoid valve.
•  Is the variable boost control (VBC) solenoid valve stuck open?.
Yes
Replace the variable boost control solenoid valve, then go to Step 9.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT VARIABLE BOOST CONTROL ACTUATOR FOR STUCK
•  Inspect the variable boost control actuator.
•  Is the variable boost control actuator stuck?
Yes
Replace the turbocharger, then go to Step 9.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT MAP SENSOR
•  Inspect the MAP sensor.
•  Is the MAP sensor normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the MAP sensor, then go to Step 9.

INSPECT TURBOCHARGER
•  Inspect the turbocharger.
•  Is the turbocharger normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the turbocharger, then go to the next step.

VERIFY THAT DTC P0234 TROUBLESHOOTING IS COMPLETED
•  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Start the engine and warm-up to normal operating temperature.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Retrieve the DTC using the M-MDS.
•  Is the PENDING CODE for this DTC present?
Yes
Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
10
VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
•  Perform “After Repair Procedure”.
•  Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
DTC troubleshooting completed.
