Mazda Factory OBD-II DTC P138C Code Diagnostic Procedure

Mazda P138C Air bypass valve position sensor minimum/maximum stop
DETECTION CONDITION
•  The PCM monitors the actual air bypass valve position using the air bypass valve position sensor while the engine running. If the air bypass valve position sensor signal response is slower than threshold, the air bypass valve position sensor stuck.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Air bypass valve position sensor malfunction
•  Air bypass valve stuck in open or closed position
•  PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
•  Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.

VERIFY REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related service repair information availability.
•  Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

IDENTIFY TRIGGER DTC FOR FREEZE FRAME DATA
•  Is P138C on FREEZE FRAME DATA?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to troubleshooting procedures for DTC in FREEZE FRAME DATA.

CLASSIFY MALFUNCTION AT AIR BYPASS VALVE POSITION SENSOR OR AIR BYPASS VALVE
•  Connect the M-MDS to DLC-2.
•  Turn the engine switch to the ON position (Engine off).
•  Access CABVP PID.
•  Move the air bypass valve position using the CABVP PID of simulation function.
•  Monitor the CABV PID of data monitor function.
•  Does the CABV PID of data monitor change according to simulation value?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 7.

INSPECT OPERATION OF AIR BYPASS VALVE
•  Remove the air bypass valve with connector connected.
•  Connect the M-MDS to DLC-2.
•  Turn the engine switch to the ON position (Engine off).
•  Access CABVPPID.
•  Visually inspect the air bypass valve operation using the CABVP PID of simulation function.
•  Does the air bypass valve move smoothly?
Yes
Go to Step 7.
No
Clean the air bypass valve, then go to the next step.

INSPECT AIR BYPASS VALVE
•  Inspect the air bypass valve.
•  Is the air bypass valve normal?
Yes
Inspect and repair or replace air bypass valve the wiring harnesses, then go to Step 8.
No
Replace the air bypass valve, then go Step 8.
7
INSPECT AIR BYPASS VALVE POSITION SENSOR
•  Perform air bypass valve position sensor inspection.
•  Is air bypass valve position sensor okay?
Yes
Inspect for poor air bypass valve position sensor related the wiring harnesses
Repair or replace if necessary, then go to the next step.
No
Replace air pipe (air bypass valve and intake throttle valve component), then go to the next step.
8
VERIFY THAT DTC P138C TROUBLESHOOTING IS COMPLETED
•  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Start the engine and warm-up to normal operating temperature.
•  Retrieve the DTC using the M-MDS.
•  Is the PENDING CODE same DTC present?
Yes
Replace PCM, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
9
VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
•  Perform “After Repair Procedure”.
•  Is there any DTC present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Troubleshooting completed.
