Fuel Gelling in Cold Ambient Temperatures This bulletin involves reconfiguring the Body Control Module (BCM). Some customers may experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) due to fuel related Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and/or may have a hard or no start condition due to fuel gelling in cold ambient temperatures (20°F or -7°C) or below. DTC?s, such as P0087, P0191 or P026B (or other DTC?s) may have been set. Ram Trucks equipped with a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel included on the RRT VIN list exhibiting the above concerns have a condition that will cause the frame mounted fuel filter heater not to function. The condition is due to a configuration setting in the Body Control Module (BCM). NOTE: The engine mounted fuel filter heater is operating properly.

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 01 number 13-68 dated February 7, 2013. The MIL is on. DTC P008700 is stored in the ECM. The fault listed can occur under certain driving conditions. It is caused by an incorrect software setting. Some driving scenarios (such as extended idling or heavy stop-and-go traffic) can cause a slight misinterpretation of the data, which causes the MIL to illuminate.

The MIL is on. DTC P0087 may be stored in the ECM. Drivability concerns such as hard starting/no starting are present. Outside temperature is sub-freezing. In tank, fuel pump may be making a straining noise. Diesel fuel requires additive blending or ?winterization? to be useable at low temperatures. At temperatures below 20° F (-7° C), No. 2 Diesel with insufficient winterization blending may lose its fluidity due to wax separation. This may clog the fuel filter or in-tank filter, preventing the engine from operating properly. No. 2 Diesel is blended by refineries to various levels of winterization (minimum useable temperature) based on month, geographical location, and the 10th percentile minimum ambient air temperature for the given region. Although rare, during sudden periods of…

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 01 number 13-07 dated June 21, 2013. The MIL is on. DTCs are stored in the engine control module (ECM). The faults listed above are caused by an incorrect software setting and can occur under certain driving conditions. In some scenarios, such as extended idling or heavy stop-and-go traffic, a slight misinterpretation of the data can occur and the MIL may be activated. The MIL will illuminate and DTC P112800 and/or DTC P113000 will be stored when the intake air temperature is high. Freeze frame data will show an intake air temperature above 104°F (40°C). The MIL will illuminate and DTC P008700 will be stored when the coolant temperature is high. Freeze frame data will show a coolant temperature above 212°F (100°C). There are no condition…

Under extreme driving conditions with the A/C compressor switched off (e.g., long idle periods or extended stop-and-go traffic), high temperatures can build up in the fuel rail and may lead to fluctuations in fuel pressure, possibly causing DTC P008700 to be stored. Coolant temperature above 102?C in the freeze frame data can be an indicator of those extreme driving conditions.

Technical Background: Under extreme driving conditions (e.g. long idle periods or extended stop and go traffic), high temperatures build up in the rail system and can lead to steam bubbles in the fuel. This causes temporary drops in fuel pressure, causing DTC P008700 (fuel rail pressure too low) to be stored. Freeze frame data will indicate those extreme driving conditions: coolant temperature is above 102? C. Production Solution: Software to optimize the cooling strategy to solve this issue is currently in development.
