Cause Moisture freezing on throttle actuator during extreme low ambient temperatures. Remedy Update software of engine control module. Software increases throttle valve flapping after engine turned off to prevent moisture buildup.

Some 2022-2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine built on or after 01-Oct-2022, 2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L PowerBoost engine on or after 01-Oct-2022, and 2023 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built on 01-Dec-2022 and through 30-Apr-2023 may exhibit reduced engine power on startup and an illuminated MIL and/or powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2101 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to the software level of the PCM. To correct this condition, perform the Service Procedure below to reprogram the PCM to the latest software level via the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS).

Many of the reported P2101 failures show that the vehicle battery was in a reduced charge state (new dealer stock or extended radio operation with the engine off). Run the engine for 1 minute, soak the vehicle for 5 hours (required to re-initialize the DDOP) and verify that the P2101 does not reset. Return the vehicle to the customer
