P0101

Mass or volume air flow sensor A range/performance

OBD-II / DTC

Reference meaning

What does this code mean?

Measured air flow does not agree with the expected operating range or the controller's plausibility model. This is a performance code, not the same as a circuit-low or circuit-high code. It does not prove the MAF sensor needs replacement: the cited Nissan bulletin includes a software-related scenario without drivability symptoms.

Sources and interpretation [1]

A code identifies a detected condition, not a part that must automatically be replaced.

Narrow by vehicle

A listed vehicle is a research lead. Confirm the engine, production range and software in the manufacturer's information.

Manufacturer example · limited applicability

Nissan NTB12-051k includes 2011–2012 Altima L32 with P0101 and no drivability complaint. Reprogramming is conditional on the current ECM part number matching the bulletin tables. This historical case does not establish software applicability for every Nissan with P0101.

[2]

Before replacing a part

Save the operating conditions and other codes. Review the correct MAF plausibility test before condemning the sensor. For the Nissan example, match the exact vehicle, engine and current ECM part number against the bulletin's tables before considering reprogramming.

Can I keep driving?

A code alone cannot establish whether driving is safe. A flashing malfunction light, severe shaking, overheating, oil-pressure warning or loss of braking or steering needs prompt attention. Stop in a safe place and seek assistance when control or engine safety is affected. Follow the vehicle handbook.
