What Is ECM / ECU?

Engine Control Module / Engine Control Unit — the computer that manages engine operation including fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed, and emissions controls.

The ECM continuously receives data from numerous sensors throughout the engine and adjusts parameters in real-time to optimize performance, fuel economy, and emissions. It stores DTCs when sensor readings fall outside expected parameters. Modern vehicles may have multiple control modules communicating via the CAN bus network.
